Olga Popova is a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the American Association of University Women, and the American Geophysical Union. She is the current DEG Editor and serves as editor-in-chief of the Environmental Geosciences (EG) journal since July 2017. In this capacity, in collaboration with DEG leadership, she prepared a special issue of EG on CCUS.
Olga joined the Department of Energy, Energy Information Admiration (EIA) as a lead petroleum engineer in 2014. She leads the unconventional oil and gas resource mapping project. Olga researches oil, gas, and subsurface geology for EIA and also enjoys history of petroleum exploration and production.
Prior to joining EIA, Olga was a research fellow at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) at the Engineering and Public Policy Department. At CMU she conducted research on Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) and collaborated with research scientists to evaluate the economic feasibility, environmental benefits, and storage resource for CCUS in the continental US.
Olga started her professional career as a well-site geologist with Nabors Drilling Inc. and provided on-site technical support for drilling development and exploratory wells for major and independent oil companies in California and Alaska. After her employment with the Nabors Drilling Inc., Olga worked for nearly seven years in the environmental consulting field in the State of Washington.
Olga received her PhD in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon in 2014. Her PhD dissertation was on “Development of Geostatistical Models to Estimate CO2 Storage Resource in Sedimentary Geologic Formations.” Prior to this, Olga received a master’s degree in Information Management from the University of Washington, and joint bachelor's/ master’s degree from the University of Novosibirsk in Geology and Geophysics.
