No doubt many readers will agree that GIS - particularly in the context of petroleum exploration and development - is one of those technologies that is hard "to get one's arms around." At least part of the reason is the absence of a standard definition of just what a GIS is and what it's supposed to do.

Consequently, taking this indefiniteness into account, we felt the petroleum industry would be best served by structuring the book to be as inclusive as possible in terms of the products and applications represented. As a result, the book is quite diverse in terms of topics, approaches, and philosophies, as well as in terms of the geological settings and operational aspects that are addressed. There is a good mix of theory, applications, resources, and practical advice, along with some historical perspectives and a sprinkling of futurism.
